Syowia Kyambi
Interdisciplinary Contemporary Artist
About the Artist

Syowia Kyambi’s interdisciplinary practice investigates memory, identity, migration, and colonial legacies through sculpture, ceramics, photography, and fibre. Drawing on a Global Majority perspective, they create works that question cultural inheritance and belonging, using material and narrative to explore how histories continue to shape contemporary experience.
Syowia Kyambi holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from Transart Institute, New York. Her work has been exhibited widely across Africa, Europe, and the United States, including at the 14th Dakar Biennale, the Venice Biennale, Lisson Gallery, the Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute, the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, and the National Museums of Kenya. Her work is held in collections including the Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute Collection, the Nicolas Logsdail Collection, the Devereux Collection, the PLP / Aspire Art Collection, the Sindika Dokolo Foundation, the Kouvola Art Museum Collection, the National Museum Nairobi, and the National Museum Mali. Through exhibitions, residencies, and collaborative projects, she has developed a practice grounded in memory, material inquiry, and the persistent reimagining of place and history.
Between Us
Between Us unravels and examines critically our perception of what is acceptable, what is private, and the meaning we impose on what we see, informed by how we are shaped by the society we live in and the conventions we live by. The work stages socially engaged, layered narratives that draw universal emotions associated with vulnerability, disruption, perception, and beauty.
