About the Work
Between Loving & Me is a participatory sound work by Syowia Kyambi, made especially for the Serpentine Galleries' Miracle Marathon in London, 8–9 October 2016, curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Lucia Pietroiusti, Ben Vickers and Claude Adjil.
Kyambi invited the public to record and submit stories of their own relationships that had created or affected change in a community or family. The work looks at personal relationships, and love in particular, as a force for social change. Its starting point is Loving v. Virginia (1967), the case in which the United States Supreme Court struck down laws prohibiting interracial marriage. The submitted stories make up the sound work, made for Serpentine Radio, the Galleries' online radio station.
The Miracle Marathon was the eleventh edition of the Serpentine's annual Marathon series, which brings together art, activism, anthropology, architecture, literature, music, philosophy, theology and science around one theme. Its concept was developed with the artist Sophia Al-Maria. It opened on 8 October at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery (now Serpentine North) and continued on 9 October on Serpentine Radio, recorded live before a studio audience at Second Home and broadcast online.
The work is ongoing.
Exhibited: Miracle Marathon, Serpentine Galleries, London, 8–9 October 2016. Curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Lucia Pietroiusti, Ben Vickers and Claude Adjil.
